This heptapeptide, sometimes referred to as KLA peptide, has been designed to be perfectly amphipathic in helical conformations. It is usually employed as a D-amino acid dimer, termed D-KLAKLAK(2) or KLAKLAKKLAKLAK. The peptide binds selectively to bacterial, but not eukaryotic cell membranes. The peptide is relatively inert outside of the cells, possesses antibacterial activity, and shows low mammalian cell cytotoxicity (Javadpour et al, 1996). Johnson et al (2013, 2014) have reported that a conjugate of KLAKLAK(2) and a hydrophilic photosensitizer, eosin Y, can be used to target bacteria for photokilling.
