[KANGAI-1; from Chinese kang ai meaning anticancer] This human gene has been identified by Dong et al (1995). Expression of KAI1 suppresses metastasis after expression in a rat prostate cancer cell line. Reduced expression is seen in human cell lines derived from metastatic prostate cancers. The gene encodes a protein of 267 amino acids with 4 hydrophobic transmembrane domains and one large extracellular hydrophilic domain with three potential N-glycosylation sites. KAI1 is evolutionarily conserved (Dong et al, 1997). In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD82.
