JAM is an acronym for 'just another method'. This test measures cell-mediated cytotoxicity. It is based on the detection of DNA fragmentation in dying cells (Matzinger et al, 1991). The test is set up like cell lysis assays measuring release of 51 Cr or 125I and the cells are harvested like in a cell proliferation assays. The JAM test measures DNA retained by living cells rather than cellular components lost by cells undergoing cell death.
Böhm et al (2000) have pointed out that the test may not be suitable to detect apoptotic cells under all circumstances. Shounan et al (1998) have reported that the Annexin-5 apoptosis assay is more accurate in detecting cells
