The J6 gene has been identified originally as a gene the expression of which is upregulated during differentiation of F9 teratocarcinoma stem cells in response to retinoic acid (Wang et al, 1985). The protein is related to serpins (serine protease inhibitor) (Wang and Gudas, 1990; Wang et al, 1992). The protein is a member of the heat shock proteins, behaves like a heat shock protein, and appears to be the murine counterpart of GP50, the major heat-induced glycoprotein in CHO cells (Henle et al, 1994).
