Intimin, encoded by the eae [Escherichia coli attaching and effacing] gene (Jerse et al, 1990) is a highly polymorphic outer membrane protein of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), both of which cause diarrheal disease by disrupting the intestinal environment through the intimate attachment of the bacteria to the intestinal epithelium. Intimin is homologous to the invasins of pathogenic Yersinia (McGraw et al, 1999), and both types of proteins act as bacterial adhesins.
