abbr. IL-B. New name for a factor formerly called BEF (B-cell derived enhancing factor) or IL-B4. IL-B from both normal and transformed B-cells consists of two subunits of similar size and amino acid composition.
This factor was described originally as a non-immunoglobulin regulatory factor spontaneously produced by murine B-lymphocytes and B-cell lines that enhances the in vitro antigen-driven antibody response of unfractionated spleen cells stimulated by thymus-dependent antigens.
BEF is biologically active also in vivo and significantly enhances primary IgM and IgG antibody responses in mice. IL-B selectively prevents the differentiation
