[Influenza virus M2 protein; IAV M2 protein] This protein is encoded in the genome of Influenza A virus. It can oligomerize and acts as a viroporin, disrupting membrane functions by forming proton channels (Pinto et al, 1992), which plays an essential role in the entry and maturation stage of the replication cycle (Wang et al, 2011; Shuck et al, 2000). A similar protein, Influenza B virus matrix protein 2 (Influenza virus BM2 protein; sometimes also called Influenza virus NB protein), is encoded by Influenza B virus, oligomerizes, and also has ion channel activity (Mould et al, 2003; Ma et al, 2008; Balannik et al, 2008; for overview see also: Pinto and Lamb, 2006; Pielak and Chou, 2011).
