[Viroporin]
Viroporins are small hydrophobic viral proteins encoded in the genomes of a wide range of animal viruses. Many of these proteins are very small and not homologous to cellular proteins. Viroporins oligomerize and modify the permeability of cellular membranes by forming aqueous channels. These proteins contain one or more transmembrane domains. Class 1 viroporins have a single transmembrane domain. Class 2 viroporins have two transmembrane domains forming a helix-turn-helix hairpin motif. Some viroporins also have an extracellular membrane region that can interacts with viral or host proteins (for overview see: Nieva et al, 2012).
