approved gene symbol for the insulin receptor. In the nomenclature of CD antigens this receptor has been given the designation CD220. For additional information on CD antigens see also: CD antigens Dictionary.
The insulin receptor consists of disulfide-bonded two alpha and two beta subunits encoded by a single gene (Ullrich et al, 1985). The genomic structure has been reported by Seino et al (1989). Differences in molecular mass, carbohydrate composition, and antigenicity between the insulin receptor-alpha subunit in liver and in muscle and adipose tissue have been observed (Caro et al, 1988).
