[Inosine-5'-monophosphate dehydrogenase 1; IMP dehydrogenase 1] This enzyme (EC1.1.1.205), also: type 1 Inosine-5'-monophosphate dehydrogenase (Natsumeda et al, 1990), is a highly conserved enzyme (Collart and Huberman, 1988) that catalyses the conversion of inosine-5'-phosphate (IMP) to xanthosine-5'-phosphate (XMP), the first committed and rate-limiting step in the de novo synthesis of guanine nucleotides (Carr et al, 1993; Hager et al, 1995).
Mutations in IMPDH1 cause retinitis pigmentosa Hedstrom, 2008; Mortimer and Hedstrom, 2005) (hence the designation RP10 [retinitis pigmentosa 10]). The enzyme has been identified as a moonlighting protein
