[interleukin-13 receptor-alpha-2; IL13R-alpha-2] The gene encoding IL13RA2 has been identified by Caput et al (1996). In the nomenclature of CD antigens the receptor has been given the designation CD213a2.
IL13RA2 binds IL13 in an IL4 independent manner. IL13 can bind with high affinity to IL13RA2, which fails to induce a signal, indicating that it acts as a decoy receptor (Kelly-Welch et al, 2003). Wood et al (2003) have generated knock-out mice lacking expression of IL13RA2. These animals are viable and fertile and show enhanced IL13 responses, suggesting that IL13RA2 serves to dampen responses to IL13 in vivo.
