[interferon-epsilon; Epsilon-Interferon] This type 1 interferon protein, called also IFNE1 [interferon-epsilon 1] and sometimes abbr. IFNE (Hardy et al, 2004) shares less than 30 % of amino acid identify with IFN-alpha (Huang et al, 2007). Hardy et al (2004) have reported that mouse IFN-epsilon is expressed in ovaries and uterus but not in tissues of hematopoietic origin.
Fung et al (2013) have reported constitutive expression of IFN-epsilon by epithelial cells of the female reproductive tract and shown that Interferon-ε protects the female reproductive tract from viral and bacterial infection.
