[Hunter-killer peptide]
abbr. HKPs. Hunter-killer peptides are chimeric synthetic peptides that selectively target specific cell types for cell death by apoptosis (Ellerby et al, 1999; Ellerby et al, 2008). These short 20-40-residue peptides contain a cellular homing domain tethered to a pro-apoptotic domain. The homing domain, which is identified frequently by phage display, allows these peptide to "hunt" for target cells/tissues, and the pro-apoptotic domain kills target cells by disrupting mitochondrial membranes (see also: Cell-penetrating peptides).
