[Human metapneumovirus small hydrophobic protein] [HMPV SH protein; HMPV small hydrophobic protein] This small protein of unknown function is encoded by human metapneumovirus, a causative agent of severe respiratory tract disease worldwide. The protein forms oligomeric structures and is thought to act as a channel-forming viroporin that affects membrane permeability (Masante et al, 2014). HMPV SH protein can significantly decrease membrane fusion activity of the virus-encoded F protein, which is necessary and sufficient for both viral binding to the target cell and fusion between the cellular plasma membrane and the viral membrane.
