Hepsin
gene symbol HPN. This protein is known also as TMPRSS1 [transmembrane serine protease-1].
Hepsin is a cell surface serine protease with the catalytic domain oriented extracellularly. It is encoded by a cDNA identified originally in a cDNA library prepared from human liver and a hepatoma cell line (Leytus et al, 1988). The gene is expressed in most tissues but levels are highest in the liver (Tsuji et al, 1991).
Knock-out mice lacking expression of hepsin have been generated by Wu et al (1998). These mice are grow normally and are fertile. They do not show obvious abnormalities in major organs.
