symbol: Hh. This Drosophila melanogaster protein is encoded by gene CG4637. Hedgehog is a segment polarity gene essential for a variety of patterning events during development such as the establishment of the anterior-posterior axis of embryonic segments and patterning of the larval imaginal disks. The name derives from the phenotype of mutants obtained in a search for mutations affecting embryonic cuticular patterns, which causes an embryo to be covered with pointy denticles (bristles), thus resembling a hedgehog (Nüsslein-Volhard and Wieschaus, 1980).
