[hepatic stimulator substance] also: regenerative stimulator substance (Yao et al, 1990) This factor of approximately 12-18 kDa has been found in the regenerating liver tissues of several species including rat, rabbit, dog, pig, humans (Fleig and Hoss, 1989; Yao et al, 1990; LaBrecque et al, 1987, 1991).
The protein is negatively charged and contains disulfide bonds that are not required for its activity. HSS stimulates organ-specifically the growth of hepatocytes, hepatoma cells, and liver epithelial cells.
