[hepatic stimulator substance] also: regenerative stimulator substance (Yao et al, 1990) This factor of approximately 12-18 kDa has been found in the regenerating liver tissues of several species including rat, rabbit, dog, pig, humans (Fleig and Hoss, 1989; Yao et al, 1990; LaBrecque et al, 1987, 1991).
The protein is negatively charged and contains disulfide bonds that are not required for its activity. HSS stimulates organ-specifically the growth of hepatocytes, hepatoma cells, and liver epithelial cells. It has been shown also to protect against acute liver failure induced by carbon tetrachloride poisoning in mice (Mei et al, 1993). In some cell lines
