HSG

[Hyperplasia suppressor gene] HSG has been identified by Chen et al (2004) as a cell proliferation suppressor. They have renamed the protein mitofusin-2.

HSG expression is reduced markedly in hyper-proliferative vascular smooth muscle cells from spontaneously hypertensive rat arteries, balloon-injured Wistar Kyoto rat arteries, or Apolipoprotein E knock-out mouse atherosclerotic arteries. Overexpression of HSG overtly suppresses serum-evoked smooth muscle cell proliferation in culture, and blocks balloon injury-induced neointimal smooth muscle cell proliferation and restenosis in rat carotid arteries.
