This designation is that for a cDNA clone identified by Türeci O et al (1997) during a screen of tissue involved by Hodgkin's disease. The encoded protein shows features of galectins and shows galactoside binding capacity. The expression of this protein appears to be restricted to peripheral blood leukocytes and lymphatic tissues. The authors have suggested the name galectin-9 for the protein.
