[Human inhibitor of apoptosis protein-2] The cDNA for this protein has been isolated by Liston et al (1996). It is expressed in many fetal and adult tissues but most abundantly in adult skeletal muscle and pancreas.
Expression of HIAP2 in mammalian cells inhibits apoptosis induced by serum withdrawal and apoptosis triggered by treatment with menadione, a potent inducerof free radicals. The protein contains 3 copies of a BIR domain in the N-terminal region and a single RING finger domain near the C-terminus. HIAP2 shares 72 % identity with cIAP2. The protein has been renamed BIRC2 [baculoviral IAP repeat-containing protein-2
