[hepatitis B virus HBx protein] The HBx protein is encoded in the genome of HBV. It sequesters p53 and facilitates the induction of cell death by apoptosis in Chang and HepG2 liver cell lines (Su et al, 2001; Wang et al, 1995). The protein has been shown to upregulate the expression of TNF-alpha in hepatocytes (Lara-Pezzi et al, 1998) and to sensitize cells to cell death by apoptosis in response to TNF-alpha (Su and Schneider, 1997).
Wang et al (2010) have reported that HBx acts as a suppressor of virus-triggered induction of type 1 interferons by interacting with the antiviral adapter protein MAVS
