[helix B-surface peptide]. This peptide, QEQLERALNSS, is derived from the aqueous face of helix B of erythropoietin (note that these amino acids mimic some of the 3D structure of erythropoietin but that these amino acids are not contiguous in helix B, HBSP having been selected to comprise only amino acids on the aqueous surface).
The peptide does not promote erythropoiesis but exhibits tissue-protective activities comparable with those of erythropoietin, as demonstrated in models of ischemic stroke and renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (Brines et al, 2008).
