H3L
This gene is encoded by an open reading frame (designated VP34-37K) in the vaccinia virus genome. H3L is a structural envelope protein (Takahashi et al, 1994). The protein is closely related to poxvirus F1L protein and capripoxvirus P32 antigen (Heine et al, 1999).
H3L protein binds to cell surface heparan sulfate and is important for intracellular mature virion morphogenesis and virus infection in vitro and in vivo (Lin et al, 2000). Davies et al (2005) have reported that H3L protein is a major target of neutralizing antibodies in humans and elicits protection against lethal challenge in mice.
