[Glycogen cell]
These cells in the ectoplacental cone of the placenta represent one type of cytotrophoblasts. They are characterised by storage of glycogen and invasion into the decidua across gestation. Lopez et al (1996) have reported that IGF-2 regulates the production of glycogen. It is thought that glycogen is a source of glucose, which may be transferred directly to circulating maternal blood, and used as a source of energy by glycogen cells and trophoblast giant cells during placentation (Tesser et al, 2010).
Glycogen cells express gene 4311 (Lescisin et al, 1988) encoding Tpbpa [trophoblast specific protein alpha], which is thought to be specific for spongiotrophoblast cells, and it has been suggested that these cells are derived from
