This term has been proposed for a major glycoprotein of the platelet glycocalyx (Okumura and Jamieson; 1976; Okamura et al, 1976). Glycocalicin corresponds to the majority of the alpha subunit of platelet glycoprotein Ib, a platelet surface membrane glycoprotein, which is a heterodimer composed of a disulfide bonded alpha and a beta chain. It is generated by proteolytic cleavage of the alpha subunit (Clemetson et al, 1981; Clemetson, 1983; Lopez et al, 1987).
In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD42b.
