abbr. GIF (a term with multiple meanings). This biochemically uncharacterized factor is found in conditioned medium of mitogen-stimulated human and rat T-lymphocytes. Upon injection into normal rats it causes a significant increase in corticosterone levels and also raises levels of ACTH (see: POMC, proopiomelanocortin).
Intracerebroventricular injection results in increased glucocorticoid blood levels. Treatment with GIF does not raise corticosterone levels in rats treated with dexamethasone or subjected to hypophysectomy to block endogenous output of ACTH. GIF thus seems to be an important modulator within the
