Mammalian ferritin is a large complex of approximately 450 kDa that consists of variable amounts of a heavy (21 kDa H-Ferritin; H = heavy or heart; encoded by the FTH1 [ferritin heavy polypeptide 1] gene (abbr. also: FTH) and a light chain (19 kDa, L-Ferritin; L = light or liver, encoded by the FTL (FTL1) [ferritin light chain 1] gene), depending upon the tissue of origin.
