[Pestivirus Erns protein] The Erns protein encoded in the genome of Pestivirus is an envelope glycoprotein with RNAse activity (Schneider et al, 1993) that causes inhibition of protein synthesis in the lymphocytes of many species. This leads to cell death by apoptosis (Bruschke et al, 1997). The protein is essential for virus growth (Hulst and Moormann 2001), but the RNase activity is dispensable. Viruses in which the RNase activity has been knocked out have been shown to be clinically attenuated (Meyer et al, 2002; Meyers et al, 1999).
Iqbal et al (2004) have demonstrated that bovine viral diarrhea virus Erns protein can act as an inhibitor of dsRNA-induced responses of cells, including the production of IFN-beta.
