[EMCV 3D protein]. This nonstructural protein is encoded by Encephalomyocarditis virus. The protein has been shown to induce the induction of autophagy (Hou et al, 2014). The protein activates the ER stress response pathway and regulates the expression of proteins associated with the Unfolded protein response pathway. Inhibiting Beclin, one of the crucial factors for autophagosome formation, interferes with autophagy induction in response to the viral protein. Since autophagy promotes the replication of encephalomyocarditis virus in host cells (Zhang et al (2011), the 2C protein plays a role as a virulence factor in promoting virus replication.
