[expressed sequence tag] An expressed sequence tag is a partial cDNA sequence containing a portion of a randomly sequenced clone from a specific cDNA gene library representing one of the mRNAs that is expressed in cells or tissues under particular conditions. ESTs thus represent a 'snap-shot' of gene expression (expression profile) in a particular tissue at a particular time.
ESTs represent the largest section of the public nucleic acid sequence databases. To date, several million of such ESTs from several thousand cDNA libraries representing more than 200 organisms have been collected in the publicly available databanks (e. g., dbBEST databank
