[excitatory amino acid carrier 1] This protein, known also as Neuronal and epithelial glutamate transporter, Sodium-dependent glutamate/aspartate transporter 3, EAAT3 [Excitatory amino acid transporter 3], SLC1A1 [solute carrier family 1 member 1], is a high affinity neuronal glutamate transporter that also transports aspartate and cysteine. EAAC2 is a truncated variant of EAAC1 transcribed from an independent promoter (Jin et al, 2002).
EACC1 is expressed particularly in brain (neurons), intestine, and kidney (Kanai and Hediger, 2002). Rome et al (2002) have localized EAAC1 to enterocytes. Canolle et al (2004) have reported that astrocytes
