The Drosophila melanogaster gene Diedel (gene: CG11501; genome symbol: die) is a small extracellular immunomodulatory cytokine of 115 amino acids secreted by the fat body into the hemolymph. Diedel is a marker of the Drosophila antimicrobial/antiviral response, and its expression is strongly induced following infection with the enveloped viruses Sindbis (SINV) and Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV) (Lamiable et al, 2016). The p65-like transcription factor dif is required for the upregulation of Diedel. Diedel has been shown to contribute to immunity and viral pathogenesis by down-regulating the expression of genes associated with the imd Immune Deficiency pathway of host defense.
