[Double homeobox protein 4] A databank synonym is DUX10 [Double homeobox protein 10]. DUX4 is a retro-transposed gene contained in each repeat unit of the D4Z4 macrosatellite found on the short arms of all acrocentric chromosomes as well as on several other chromosomes. Deletion of a subset of these D4Z4 macrosatellite units in the subtelomeric region of chromosome 4 cause facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD), a degenerative muscle disease usually occurring in the first or second decade of life and characterized by slowly progressive weakness of face, upper-arm, and shoulder girdle muscles.
