DM-GRASP, also referred to as GRASP, is an integral membrane glycoprotein expressed on a restricted set of axons in the developing chick nervous system that promotes neurite extension (Burns et al, 1991). The name is derived as an acronym from 'immunoglobulin-like restricted axonal surface protein' and the prefix refers to the observation that the protein is expressed in the dorsal funiculus and ventral midline of the chick spinal cord.
DeBernardo and Chang (1995) have reported that sensory, sympathetic, and ciliary neurons express DM-GRASP and extend neurites on a DM-GRASP substrate. Tectal, diencephalic, and retinal cells express very low level of DM-GRASP or not at all, and do not extend neurites on a DM-GRASP substrate. DM-GRASP expression is downregulated on sensory neurons
