Coleoptericin A and Coleoptericin B are two structurally related antibacterial proteins isolated from larvae of a beetle, Allomyrina dichotoma (Japanese rhinoceros beetle; Trypoxylus dichotomus), immunized with Escherichia coli. These antibacterial proteins have 94 %, 75 %, 50 % and 43 % similarity to rhinocerosin, holotricin-2, coleoptericins and Acaloleptin A1.
Coleoptericin gene expression is inducible by bacteria. Expression is strong in the fat bodies and hemocytes, and weak in the Malpighian tubules.
The recombinant proteins show strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Bacillus subtilis. The two peptides
