Caspin has been identified as a 45 kDa member of the serpin family (the name is derived from collagen-associated serpin). Caspin is found in the conditioned medium of the murine colon adenocarcinoma cell line, colon26. Caspin binds specifically to collagen type 1 with high affinity and to collagen type 3 with lower affinity. The expression of caspin correlates with the metastatic capacity of colon26 cells, being highest in those variants that show a high level of metastasis to the lung. Sequence analysis shows that Caspin is the murine counterpart of PEDF [pigment epithelium-derived factor] (Kozaki et al, 1998).
