Calcitermin

This antimicrobial peptide has been isolated from human airway secretions (Cole et al, 2001). Its amino acid sequence is equivalent to the 15 C-terminal residues of the S100 protein, calgranulin C (S100A12) (S100A12(78-92) or Calgranulin C(78-92)) and has the sequence VAIALKAAHYHTHKE (Val-Ala-Ile-Ala-Leu-Lys-Ala-Ala-His-Tyr-His-Thr-His-Lys-Glu). The peptide may function as a defense peptide that is active primarily against Gram-negative bacteria. The antimicrobial activity of calcitermin is enhanced in acidic buffers (pH 5.4) and in the presence of micromolar concentrations of ZnCl(2).
