[CXCL1-like] is a chemokine identified in macaques. It shows highest similarity to human CXCL1. One copy of the duplicated CXCL1 genes is a pseudogene in hominids, whereas the gene in macaques has been maintained as a functionally active CXCL1L (Nomiya et al, 2007).
CXCL1L, which contains 3 exons, has been renamed CXCL1L-alpha [CXCL1-like-alpha], following the identification of CXCL1L-beta [CXCL1-like-beta], which contains 4 exons, is 50 amino acids longer than the original CXCL1L, and is expressed much more abundantly in macaque tissues. CXCL1L-beta
