[caspase-independent mitotic death] CIMD is a kind of active cell death that has been described to occur after disruption of the attachment of microtubules to kinetochores in cells that lack the spindle checkpoint protein BUB1 (Niikura et al, 2007).
CIMD does not show the same morphological features as those observed during mitotic catastrophe or cell death by apoptosis. CIMD does not involve cytochrome C release from the mitochondria and is independent of caspase activation.
CIMD prevents aneuploidy caused by a failure of the spindle checkpoint and thus eliminates cells prone to substantial chromosome missegregation. Cells
