[Cell death protein 7] The Caenorhabditis elegans gene CED7 has been isolated initially as a gene affecting the elimination of cells undergoing cell death by apoptosis (Ellis et al, 1991). The protein sequence of CED7 protein is similar to the mammalian ABC (ATP binding cassette) transporter ABC1. This transporter effects the translocation of a variety of substrates across cell membranes and has been implicated also in the engulfment of cell corpses generated during apoptosis and necrosis (see also: efferocytosis). It is considered the mammalian homolog of CED7 (Luciani and Chimini, 1996; Moynault et al, 1998). CED7 functions in dying and engulfing
