abbr. CAF (a term with multiple meanings). This biochemically uncharacterized factor is secreted by the CD8(+) cells of HIV-infected individuals. It inhibits HIV replication in cultured CD4(+) cells by a nonlytic, non-MHC restricted mechanism. CAF activity is not restricted to HIVspecific T-cells.
Antibodies to IFN-alpha, IFN-beta, TGF-beta, TNF-alpha, TNF-beta, IL4, IL6, and IL8 do not inactivate the antiviral effect of CAF (see also: HIV1-inhibitory factor).
