This term pertains to a number of proteins that contain a conserved C-terminally located globular protein domain (C1q domain or C1q globular domain; abbr. also gC1q domain) found in all three subunits of complement factor C1q. This domain, frequently referred to as C1q-like domain when it occurs in other proteins, is a highly conserved oligomerization motif and is known to bind to a variety of ligands. This family is being referred to also as the C1q/TNF superfamily or CTRP family [C1q/TNF-related protein family] as the globular C1q signature domain
