[brisk ganglion cells] This term is used by neurobiologists to refer to neurons or ganglion cells in the mammalian retina in which they constitute about 50 % of the population (Rowe and Palmer, 1994; Troy and Shou, 2002).
These cells respond rapidly at the onset of a stimulus with relatively high firing rates (Cleland and Levick, 1974; Stone and Fukuda, 1974). Brisk cells are highly sensitive to spatiotemporal changes with stimulus contrasts as low as 0.5 % (Dhingra and Smith, 2004; Linsenmeier et al, 1982). Xu et al (2005) have shown that slowly responding sluggish cells and fast responding brisk cells detect contasts with similar sensitivity.
