Bactenecins are highly cationic polypeptides found in the granules of bovine neutrophils. The peptides show potent antimicrobial activity in vitro.
Bactenecin is a dodecapeptide (RLCRIVVIRVCR) isolated from bovine neutrophils (Romeo et al, 1988; Storici et al, 1996). The two cysteine residues are engaged in disulfide bonding. Bactenecin is bactericidal for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Schluesener et al (1993) have reported that bactenecin is cytotoxic to rat and human T-cells and may function as a local regulator inhibiting clonal expansion of T lymphocytes
