BGLF5 is a lytic-phase protein encoded by Epstein-Barr virus that encodes an EBV-specific alkaline deoxyribonuclease. It is being referred to also as Epstein-Barr virus p55-DNAse.
BGLF5 contributes also to immune evasion by downregulating host cell protein synthesis, including the production of HLA molecules during virus replication. his leads to reduced levels of these antigen-presenting complexes at the surface of infected cells and allows infected cells to escape from T-cell recognition (Zuo et al, 2008; Rowe et al, 2007).
van Gent et al (2011) have reported that BGLF5 acts also as an immune evasion protein and contributes to downregulating the viral dsDNA sensor TLR9 through RNA degradation. Reducing the levels of a pattern recognition receptor
