(approved gene symbol) [BARH-like-2; BarH-like 2 homeobox protein] BARHL2 is one of two murine and human homologs of the Drosophila melanogaster BarH1 and BarH2 (Bar) genes, which are required for the fate determination of external sensory organs in the fly (Bulfone et al, 2000). Both fly genes are essential for normal lens formation, formation of three types of pigment cells, and elimination of excess cells from mature ommatidia (Higashijima et al, 1992).
