[pigment cell]
a general term for any cell type containing pigmented granules (melanosomes; Schraermeyer et al, 1996) as a normal constituent. Such granules are observed, for example in retinal pigment epithelial cells, melanocytes and melanoma cells, Kupffer cells, in neuronal tissues, or the ink gland of cuttle fish. Pigment production is subject to various stimuli, including growth factors, cytokines, and hormones. In vertebrates, the most important signals are Alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, melanin concentrating hormone, melatonin, and catecholamines (deOliveira et al, 1996).
