(approved gene symbol) [BCL2-associated athanogene-1] In some databanks the protein is being referred to also as BAG family molecular chaperone regulator 1. This murine protein of 219 amino acids (32 kDa) was identified as a protein that interacts with BCL2 (Takayama et al, 1998). The BAG1 protein shares no significant homology with BCL2 or other BCL2 family proteins. Human BAG1 protein is 55 amino acids longer than the murine protein. It is expressed as four isoforms with apparent molecular masses of 50 kDa, 46 kDa, 33 kDa and 29 kDa which differ in their subcellular localizations and may thus have distinct functions in the cells (Yang et al, 1998; Packham et al, 1997).
