abbr. BIF (a term with multiple meanings). This factor of ca 20 kDa is produced by human peripheral blood T-cells. BIF is assayed by induction of IgM-, IgG-, and IgA-secreting cells in peripheral blood B-cells (non-T-cells) stimulated into proliferation with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria strain Cowan I (Sac), and in the IgM cell line SKW6-Cl4.
BIF production by T-cells is induced by dexamethasone. BIF is separable from IL2 and is probably identical with one of the factors described as BSF (B-cell stimulating factors).
