also: Aos. The Drosophila melanogaster argos gene (CG4531) has been identified by Freeman et al (1992). It encodes a secreted protein (Freeman, 1994) that is required for viability and that regulates the determination of cells in the Drosophila eye. Argos has been shown also to be involved in oogenesis (Zhao and Bownes, 1999) and the regulation of midline glial cell numbers in the developing embryo (Stemerdink and Jacobs (1997).
